The ABC's Misleading Report on Net Zero: A Think Tank Demands an Apology

'Misleading Australians': Think Tank Demands Apology from ABC Over 'Blatantly False' Claim

The Page Research Centre, the think tank behind a report that influenced the National Party's decision to abandon net zero, has demanded an apology from the ABC for 'deliberately' misrepresenting its research. The report, 'Delivering a High Energy Australia', analyzed the impact of emissions targets on energy prices and was based on sources such as the CSIRO, AEMO, the Australian Energy Regulator, and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

However, the ABC's 7.30 program on Monday only mentioned that the report included research from Coal Australia, which the think tank claims is 'blatantly false'. The think tank argues that the ABC's attempt to 'discredit their thorough research' and mislead the audience by only pointing to Coal Australia is a serious issue.

'Last night on 7.30, the ABC deliberately misrepresented our report that led to the National Party abandoning Net Zero,' the think tank said on X on Tuesday. 'Our paper, Delivering a High Energy Australia, is a meticulous, evidence-based discussion paper built on more than 160 detailed references. It lays out, in full, how net zero is driving up energy prices, crippling Australian industry - and what we can do about it.'

The think tank further explains that Coal Australia was cited as an 'additional, supplementary reference' in their report, and the modeling commissioned by Coal Australia 'merely reinforced' their earlier findings. They argue that the ABC knew the truth but still ran the false claim, knowingly misleading their audience and casting doubt on legitimate research.

'The ABC needs to be held accountable. We've demanded a full retraction and apology. Australians deserve to hear the truth, not taxpayer-funded lies designed to undermine real, legitimate research,' the think tank stated. The report's findings, which argue that Australia's current energy policies and the net zero strategy are failing, driving up costs and damaging industry, were a key factor in the National Party's decision to drop the 2050 emissions target.

The controversy surrounding the ABC's report and its impact on public policy raises important questions about the role of media in shaping public opinion and the responsibility of news organizations to present accurate and unbiased information. What do you think? Do you agree with the think tank's demands for an apology? Or do you think the ABC's reporting was fair and balanced? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
