The cameras, developed by Bosch, are trained to recognize black-grass at various growth stages, thanks to the extensive image database the research team has compiled.

Dr. David Comont, an evolutionary ecologist at Rothamsted Research, explains: "We've combined our extensive knowledge of black-grass with cutting-edge technology. By targeting herbicides only where necessary, we can reduce herbicide use, lower costs for farmers, and maintain effective weed control."

The system works by having the camera identify areas where black-grass is present and then instructing the sprayer to target those specific spots. This map-based approach is a far cry from traditional methods that often involve blanket herbicide application.

The research team experimented with different camera setups, eventually settling on a configuration of 28 cameras set at a height of 1.1 meters (3.2 feet). Over three years, they collected thousands of images, mapping black-grass infestations across over 100 hectares (247 acres) of farmland.

Muhammad Kassem, a data scientist at Bosch, highlights the accuracy of their AI system: "We've scanned and analyzed over 5,000 images, covering various seasons and different crop types. The AI's accuracy is impressive, reaching around 85%."

This project, funded by the Department for Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs and UK Research and Innovation, showcases the potential of AI in agriculture.
