Bold claim first: Apple is quietly exploring a second foldable form in addition to a book-style iPhone Fold, but nothing is decided yet. Here's what we know, and what it could mean for you.
Apple has been testing a potential clamshell-style iPhone to accompany its anticipated book-style Fold, according to ongoing industry chatter. The aim is to release the first iPhone Fold, with a book-like hinge, in fall 2026. That design would resemble existing foldables from Samsung and Motorola, which popularized the modern clamshell form factor reminiscent of classic flip phones from the early 2000s.
A recent post on the Chinese social network Weibo from leaker Fixed Focus Digital adds fuel to the clamshell possibility, though there’s still no guarantee the device will reach production. In short: Apple hasn’t decided whether this clamshell model will enter mass production tests.
This isn’t the first time the clamshell idea has floated around. Early rumors years ago suggested Apple might pursue a Flip-style iPhone, a notion reinforced by patents discovered over a decade ago. More recently, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple was still weighing a clamshell option.
If a clamshell fold becomes reality, it would offer a different balance of portability and screen real estate. A compact external footprint could slip into a pocket with ease, while an internal display unfolds to a larger tablet-like view. An external display could provide glanceable notifications and integrate with iOS widgets to show quick information from favorite apps.
Despite the potential benefits, Gurman cautions that Apple may opt to skip the clamshell path altogether. The company is likely to watch how the first Fold is received before deciding on a second foldable form.
Beyond the foldables, Apple is also expected to refresh its mainline lineup in fall 2026, with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max rumored to debut then. The standard iPhone 18 reportedly isn’t planned until a spring 2027 release window.
