Charlton’s game with Portsmouth was halted and ultimately abandoned after a medical emergency in the stands. The Championship clash, scheduled for a 12:30pm kickoff at The Valley, stopped in the 13th minute with the score level at 0-0 as a home supporter in the Covered End required urgent assistance.
Referee Matthew Donohue directed the players off the pitch and into the changing rooms just six minutes after the incident began. He had been alerted to the severity of the situation by Charlton supporters who flagged the official’s attention in a push to get help on-site.
Medics tended to the fan for around 12 more minutes before the individual was removed from the stadium on a stretcher.
At approximately 1:30pm, roughly three-quarters of an hour after the stoppage started, it was confirmed that the match would not resume. Stadium announcer Dave Lockwood offered best wishes to the affected supporter and thanked the medical team and first responders. He added that an rescheduling plan would be provided in due course and urged everyone to leave the venue safely and calmly.
Elsewhere, Leicester produced a furious first-half display to beat Derby 3-1 at Pride Park, moving three goals ahead thanks to strikes from Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Oliver Skipp, and Jordan James.
Derby’s Sondre Langas pulled a goal back after halftime in the first league meeting between the sides since January 2014, but the visitors held on to claim the points, easing pressure on manager Marti Cifuentes. Derby, by contrast, suffered a second defeat in a row at home.
Tom Ince’s 100th Championship goal helped Watford come from behind to win 3-2 at Vicarage Road, denting Norwich’s revival. The Hornets trailed at halftime after a flat first 45 minutes, yet brightened after the break as they clawed their way back against a Canaries side mired in the relegation zone.
Norwich had struck twice first, showing enterprise despite their precarious league position, but Luca Kjerrumgaard’s two goals — both headers — and Ince’s late poacher’s finish sealed Watford’s dramatic comeback.
