Bruntwood SciTech has unveiled plans for a £17 million transformation of the Manchester One tower, a 21-storey landmark that has become an integral part of the city's identity. The existing 131,000 sq ft building will undergo a complete refurbishment, retaining its original charm while modernizing its interior. The extension, located on Portland Street and Sackville Street, will feature a stunning double-height reception, creating a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere. Communal social spaces and open staircases will encourage collaboration and a sense of community within the tower.
Inside the tower, all windows will be replaced, and the facade refreshed, ensuring a bright and contemporary feel. The office floors and core areas, including lifts, stairs, and washrooms, will undergo rolling upgrades, enhancing the overall experience for tenants and visitors.
But this project is more than just a facelift. Bruntwood SciTech aims to make Manchester One a beacon of sustainability, with gas-fired boilers being replaced by heat pump systems. A new electrical substation will support electrification, and smart building systems will be implemented throughout, ensuring the tower is future-proofed.
The project team, led by Bridge Architects and Cubicworks, aims to complete construction by early 2028. Matthew Morten, Bruntwood SciTech's building and construction director, emphasized the tower's significance: "Manchester One is an enduring symbol of Manchester's resilience and ambition. Our proposals ensure it continues to inspire while embracing sustainability."
