New Car Tax Changes 2026: Petrol & Diesel Cars (2001-2017) Explained! (2026)

New car tax bands for petrol and diesel cars registered between 2001 and 2017 will be introduced this Spring, affecting almost all UK road users. The changes will impact owners of vehicles registered between 2001 and 2017, with a sliding scale of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) tax fees based on overall emissions. Standard and first-year VED rates will rise for cars registered after 2017, while cars built before 2001 will also face higher bills. The most polluting vehicles emitting over 255g/km of CO2 in the Band M category are most affected, with bills increasing from £760 to £790 annually. Band L motorists, cars producing between 226 and 255g/km of CO2, will see annual bills rise by £25. Cars in Bands I, J, and K will face £15 price increases, while those in Bands F, G, and H will see bills increase by £10. Lower polluting vehicles in Bands D and E will see prices jump by £5. Clean vehicles emitting under 120g/km of CO2 will remain unaffected, with no price hikes.
