A storm of apologies and reflections has swept through Singapore's political landscape, centering around comments made by Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh on a CNA program. This situation underscores the delicate balance between free speech, public opinion, and the authority of the courts.
Pritam Singh, the chief of the Workers' Party (WP), found himself in hot water after statements made on 'The Assembly' program, which were deemed to potentially be in contempt of court. The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) flagged these comments, leading to apologies from both Singh and Mediacorp, CNA's parent company.
In a Facebook post, Singh acknowledged that his statements could be interpreted as undermining the court's integrity and impartiality. He issued an unreserved apology and pledged to avoid similar comments in the future. Mediacorp also swiftly apologized, removing the interview from its platforms after the AGC's notification.
The Ministry of Law (MinLaw) weighed in, stating that Singh's comments were "very wrong" and had no place in a system built on the rule of law. The crux of the issue revolved around Singh's remarks regarding a case where he was found guilty of lying to a parliamentary committee. The episode aired shortly after his appeal against the conviction was heard, with the court later dismissing the appeal.
During the interview, Singh had suggested that the 'court of public opinion' held more weight than the court's judgment. He also implied that the prosecution against him was politically motivated, questioning the integrity of the legal system. MinLaw emphasized that such comments denigrate the court's judgment and erode public trust in the judiciary, which is "completely unacceptable."
But here's where it gets controversial... Singh's comments also touched on his political opponents, suggesting they would try to damage his and his party's reputation. This adds another layer to the controversy, raising questions about the role of political rivalry in such situations.
The AGC had previously notified Singh about the potential contempt of court, prompting his apology. The Ministry welcomed Singh's subsequent remarks, made after his appeal was dismissed, where he acknowledged the importance of not questioning the courts' integrity.
Mediacorp, in its statement, admitted that publishing the interview was a potential contempt of court and issued a full apology. The interview, recorded on July 26, 2025, was quickly taken down from their platforms.
Minister for Law Edwin Tong had previously criticized Singh's comments, calling them "outrageous" and "plainly wrong." Tong highlighted that Singh had been investigated, tried, and convicted after a thorough process. He stressed that the court's judgment was valid and binding and should not be dismissed or undermined.
And this is the part most people miss... After his appeal was dismissed, Singh showed a shift in tone. He expressed respect for the court's judgment and acknowledged the Supreme Court's importance in the constitutional framework. He emphasized his respect for the courts' independence, rigor, and professionalism.
When asked about his comments on 'The Assembly' regarding his political opponents, Singh clarified that while political differences exist, they should not lead to undermining the system or questioning the courts' integrity.
