While Keith Richards is often remembered as the driving force behind The Rolling Stones' ever-evolving guitar lineup, his partnership with Ronnie Wood is a testament to their unique musical connection.
Brian Jones, a founding member, laid the foundation for the band's blues rock sound in the 1960s. However, his drug use and creative influence waned over time, impacting his collaboration with Richards. Mick Taylor, another talented guitarist, struggled with his own challenges, making him a less sustainable partner for Richards. When Taylor left in 1975, Wood became the perfect replacement, offering a natural musical symbiosis.
Wood and Richards shared a remarkable musical connection, communicating solely through music and instinctively weaving their ideas together. This synergy was most evident on the 1978 track 'Beast of Burden' from the album Some Girls. The song's groove and ease of performance showcased their unique collaboration.
Wood described the creative process: 'It just came very naturally in the studio. We slipped into our parts, and Keith had his going. It might have seemed planned, but we can pick it up today and it will naturally slip back into the groove. It's quite amazing.'
Their guitar weaving, an 'ancient form of weaving,' as Wood calls it, is a natural and unexplained phenomenon. Richards and Wood's ability to cross over effortlessly, with one playing high and the other low, showcases their musical intuition.
'Beast of Burden' also pushed Mick Jagger's vocal abilities. The song's rhythmic guitar performance demanded a deeper vocal performance from Jagger, moving away from the traditional rock and roll style. Despite the song's emotional delivery, the lyrics are more about attitude than personal sentiment, as Jagger explained.
The track's success lies in the seamless collaboration between Richards and Wood, who brought out the best in each other and pushed the band's creative boundaries.
